Football Announces 2005 Team Captains

FROSTBURG, Md. —Kevin Culbert (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley), senior linebacker Chris Lentz (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run), junior center Jack Hopkins (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) and junior quarterback Jimmy Ward (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) have been named captains of the Frostburg State football team for the 2005 season, head coach Rubin Stevenson announced.

Culbert is among the top defensive linemen in all of Division III and returns for his final season after missing the last seven games of 2004 with a hand injury.

He was named to pre-season All-America teams by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette (first team), Lindy’s Football Magazine (second team) and (second team) last year and was on pace for another stellar season with 32 tackles, including 10.5 for loss and 3.0 sacks before the injury.

As a junior in 2003, Culbert enjoyed one of the top seasons in FSU history, earning College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSida) Division III All-America honorable mention, third-team Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-America, first-team All-ECAC, first-team All-Atlantic Central Football Conference, first-team Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-South Region and ACFC Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors.

He led the Bobcats with 80 tackles, including 22 tackles for loss, 10.0 sacks and two forced fumbles, and he also added three pass breakups, a fumble recovery, a blocked extra point and a safety.

Lentz begins his final season of collegiate football as one of the top linebackers in the Atlantic Central Football Conference.

As a junior last year, he was named the Frostburg State Male Student-Athlete of the Year as well FSU football’s MVP, and earned All-ACFC honorable mention honors.

He led the Bobcats with a career-high 90 tackles, tied for second on the squad with 3.5 sacks and ranked third with 8.5 tackles for loss.

Hopkins returns to anchor the offensive line after starting the final two games of last season. He also started the final four games of the 2003 campaign.

Ward enters his second season as the starting signal caller for the Bobcats.

Last year, he started all 10 games and completed 140-of-283 passes for 1,544 yards. He tossed 10 touchdowns and was intercepted 14 times.

The Bobcats open the 2005 season this Saturday when they travel to Newport News, Va. to take on Apprentice in an Atlantic Central Football Conference contest beginning at 1 pm.
