Football Downs Thomas More to Break Eight-Game Road Losing Streak

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. — After scoring 23 unanswered second-half points, the Frostburg State football team snapped an eight-game road losing streak with a 23-9 victory over Thomas More in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

The Bobcats (3-3) rushed for a season-high 250 yards against a Saints defense that entered the game ranked 30th in the nation in run defense, holding opponents to just 96.0 rushing yards per game. TMC (4-2) also entered Saturday ranked seventh in scoring defense at a stingy 8.8 points per game.

Thomas More took an early 6-0 lead with 8:37 remaining in the opening quarter when sophomore wide receiver John Resch hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Seth Ellis. Senior kicker Brian Sheeley missed the extra point.

In the third quarter, FSU mounted a comeback as sophomore running back Shanorm Young (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic) scored on a five-yard run with 9:33 remaining and freshman kicker Mark Sedlock (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) split the uprights on the extra point giving FSU a 7-6 advantage.

After forcing the Saints to punt on their next possession, Frostburg State started another assault from its own 20. Young started the drive with a 23-yard carry and followed with a nine-yard gain before breaking off a career-long 48-yard sprint into the endzone. Sedlock converted the extra point to extend the Bobcat lead to 14-6.

Freshman running back Ferris Bruton (Bowie, Md./High Point) pushed the Frostburg State lead to 20-6 after rushing 66 yards for his first career touchdown with 5:43 left in the game.

On the next Saint possession, freshman quarterback Trevor Stellman’s pass was intercepted by senior defensive end Kevin Culbert (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) giving the Bobcats ball on the TMC 31.

FSU marched to the Saint five-yard line but was unable to find the endzone and settled for a 25-yard field goal by Sedlock with 2:54 left to close out the scoring.

Thomas More was penalized 12 times for 127 yards while the Bobcats were flagged 11 times for 74 yards. FSU piled up a season-high 401 yards of total offense and recorded a season-best four interceptions.

Young finished the day with career-high 154 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries while also catching four passes for 42 yards. Bruton had a breakout game rushing three times for 79 yards and a score and hauling in one pass for 34 yards. Senior tail back Tyran Thompson led TMC with 27 carries for 95 yards.

Bobcat redshirt-junior quarterback Jimmy Ward (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) was 17-of-34 for 151 yards.

In his first career start, freshman linebacker Kevin Glascock (Welcome, Md./Lackey) made a team-high 11 tackles with one pass breakup. Junior defensive lineman Ryan Cutsail (Middletown, Md./Middletown) recorded 10 tackles and Culbert had nine tackles, including two sacks for 20 yards, one interception, two pass breakups and three quarterback hurries. Junior defensive back Vincent Thomas (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) picked off two passes for 53 yards.

The Bobcats return to action next Saturday on Homecoming weekend when they host Seton Hill at 1:00 pm.
