Football Ends Two-Game Winning Streak With 21-7 Setback to Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. - Tres Cobb threw for 167 yards and two touchdowns to guide Waynesburg to a 21-7 victory over Frostburg State, Saturday afternoon at Wiley Stadium.

FSU, who was coming off of back-to-back wins, falls to 2-6 while Waynesburg moves to 5-4 with its fifth win in the last six games.

Despite the loss, the Bobcats outgained the Yellow Jackets in total offense (268-242) and rushing yards (149-68). However, WC held the edge in passing yards (174-119) and time of possession (36:06-23:54).

Cobb tossed his first score of the afternoon with 27 seconds left in the opening quarter to put Waynesburg ahead 7-0.

The hosts started the drive on their own 30 and marched 70 yards in 12 plays in just over six minutes, capped by a Cobb eight-yard scoring strike to Josh Fisher.

Waynesburg scored its second touchdown of the game after forcing Frostburg State to punt on the ensuing possession. Bobcat punter Nicholas Payne (Frostburg, Md./Northern Garrett) fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Tom Hudson, who returned it 34 yards for the touchdown.

The Yellow Jackets scored their third and final touchdown with nine seconds left in the second quarter. Cobb led the drive, that started at the Waynesburg 40, by completing three passes for 42 yards including a 10-yard scoring toss to Chuck Wright.

The Bobcats cut the deficit to 21-7 on their second possession of the third quarter. FSU needed just two plays for the score; senior Antoine Lewis (Baltimore, Md./City College) rushed for 48 yards and junior Andre Dixon (Washington, D.C./Eleanor Roosevelt) scored on a 17-yard run.

After holding the Yellow Jackets to just four yards on three plays and a 14-yard punt, FSU had its drive start on the WC 48. On the third play of the drive, Dixon completed a pass to senior T.J. Changuris (Frederick, Md./Seneca Valley) for 16 yards to the 33.

The Bobcats maneuvered their way down to the WC 18, but faced a third and eight situation. Dixon completed a pass to junior Shanorm Young (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic) for 12 yards down to the six, but on the next play, Waynesburg stripped the ball from Lewis and Aaron Wood fell on it at the four-yard line to end the scoring threat.

Waynesburg would later end any Bobcat comeback, intercepting passes on FSU’s final two drives of the game.

Dixon led Frostburg State, completing 14-of-27 passes for 119 yards and running the ball six times for 54 yards and one touchdown.

Sophomore linebacker Brendan Clancy (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) recorded a game-high 10 tackles, six solo and four assisted, with two tackles for loss and one sack. Senior linebacker Lathon Romaine (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) posted eight stops, seven solo and one assisted, with two stops behind the line.

Frostburg State returns to action next Saturday in the Eighth Annual Regents’ Cup when it faces rival Salisbury at 2:00 pm in Towson, Md.
