Frostburg State Chasing AMCC Title with Young But Deep Lineup

FROSTBURG, MD - Losing the program’s all-time winningest player as well as two more all-conference selections may have most coaches thinking about rebuilding, but third-year Head Coach Stuart Swink and his Frostburg State men’s tennis team has other ideas.

After a tough 5-11 regular season last year, the Bobcats nearly pulled off the upset at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships, finishing as runners-up to champion Penn State Behrend by a slight 11-10 margin.

This season, Frostburg State will look to the leadership and play of two seniors and the depth provided by a host of newcomers to once again challenge for the conference crown.

“Steady improvement will dictate this team’s ability to compete for the AMCC title after finishing a very close second the last two seasons,” said Swink.

Senior Gary Lyst (Silver Spring, Md./Blair) returns to anchor the team at the No. 1 singles and doubles flights after earning AMCC Co-Player of the Year honors a year ago.

Lyst went 12-6 in singles play and 14-3 in doubles action, and he capped his season by winning conference titles at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.

Senior Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick, Md./Frederick) returns to the squad at the No. 2 singles and doubles spots sporting an improved serve and better all-around play.

He picked up one singles and one doubles win last year before leaving the team mid-season. Two years ago, he went 7-10 in singles play and 10-6 in doubles action.

Freshman Matt Chisholm (La Plata, Md./La Plata) will man the No. 3 singles flight while teaming with Lyst at the top doubles position, while fellow freshman Jacob Hundert (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) is slotted at the No. 4 singles flight and will pair with Spangenberg at No. 2 doubles.

Sophomore Chris Schoenbauer (Riva, Md./South River) and freshman John Thrasher (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) will compete at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots, respectively. The two will also team up at the No. 3 doubles flight.

Sophomores Matt Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and Andrew Holt (Lothian, Md./Southern) will also see time at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles as will sophomore transfer Andrew Thomas (La Plata, Md./Thomas Stone/UMBC).

Stephens won his lone singles match last season, while Holt posted two singles and two doubles victories a year ago.

In addition to AMCC opponents Penn State Altoona, Penn State Behrend and Pitt-Greensburg, Frostburg State will face a challenging schedule featuring non-conference contests against Division II opponents Shepherd and Charleston.

The Bobcats, who won their only AMCC title in 2001, will look to cap their season with another league crown April 17 at the Oxford North Athletic Club in Wexford, Pa.
