Frostburg State Names Avery Carey Assistant Women's Basketball Coach

Frostburg, MD - Frostburg State University has named Avery Carey the assistant women's basketball coach, Athletic Director Ralph Brewer announced Wednesday.

"I'm really excited about the opportunity to coach," said Carey. "I feel through my years of playing that I have gained enough knowledge to be able to give back and be a positive influence for the players."

"I am extremely delighted to have Avery here at FSU," said Jody Pepple, who enters her first season as head coach after serving as the team's top assistant the last six years. "He brings a lot of knowledge, heart and enthusiasm to the program, he's an excellent player turned coach and he will be a great asset to both the university and the community of Frostburg."

Carey joins the Bobcat staff after having played for the Holland Hammers in the Netherlands last year.

A 1999 graduate of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., with a degree in communications, Carey was a three-year member of the Patriots.

As a junior, Carey served as team co-captain, started 20 of the 27 games in which he played and averaged 11.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per contest for Paul Westhead. Carey scored a career-high 26 points against both California Poly and Richmond.

Carey then missed the following season with a back injury before returning for his senior year under Jim Larranaga. Carey averaged 3.6 points and 1.9 rebounds, and he helped the Patriots win the Colonial Athletic Association championship and earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Prior to George Mason, Carey played at nearby Hagerstown (Md.) Community College, where he earned his associates degree in business administration. He was team co-captain both seasons and led the Hawks to a pair of regional championship titles.

He earned all-region honors as a freshman and was named to the Region 20 All-Tournament Team as a sophomore.

Carey is a 1994 graduate of North Hagerstown (Md.) High School. As a senior, he served as team captain and earned team MVP and first-team All-Tri-State honors.
