Frostburg State Names Mike Schmidt Assistant Track & Field Coach

FROSTBURG, MD — Mike Schmidt has been named the assistant coach for the Frostburg State University men's and women's track and field programs, Bobcat Athletic Director Ralph Brewer announced today.

Schmidt, who will work with the Bobcat pole vaulters and throwers, joins the Red and Black coaching staff after having served as head coach for the men's and women's cross country and track and field teams at the State University of New York at New Paltz since 1999.

At New Paltz, Schmidt coached conference champions in pole vault, javelin and shot put and guided one of his athletes to an Eastern College Athletic Conference title in the heptathlon. Another of his athletes has been a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championships in the shot put each of the last two seasons and recently broke a 17-year old conference record.

Schmidt enjoyed similar success as New Paltz's head cross country coach. In his first year, Schmidt guided the men's team to second place at the conference championships as well as seventh place at the regional meet. Both school-record finishes were impressive improvements from respective seventh- and 22nd-place showings the previous season.

During Schmidt's tenure, five cross country runners earned all-conference honors (there had been just one in school history previously) and four garnered all-region accolades (there had been none in school history).

Schmidt's teams have also enjoyed great academic success as well, as both of his 2001 cross country teams were named Academic All-America teams and one individual earned Academic All-America honors.

"I'm pleased to have Mike Schmidt as a member of my staff," said Bobcat head coach Felix Moreno. "He brings the intensity and knowledge that I expect from all my assistants. I think he will do an excellent job."

Schmidt earned his degree in elementary education in 1999 from Plattsburgh State University, where he competed in the pole vault and decathlon under Moreno. Schmidt is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association and is also a USA Track & Field Level II jumps coach.

"I'm honored to work for Frostburg State University and Coach Moreno," Schmidt said. "Both have reputations as winners. FSU has one of the best athletic programs in Division III, and I hope I can contribute to its winning tradition."
