From left are BACCHUS Chairperson Dr. Ed Hammond, who is president of Fort Hayes State University; FSU students Emily Llewellyn, Robert Lemaire, Veronica Morris and Desiree Despertt; and Dr. Kevin Kruger, president of NASPA, Student Affairs in Higher Education.

Frostburg State University’s BURG Peer Education Network received the National Outstanding Peer Education Affiliate of the Year Award at the BACCHUS Network’s annual General Assembly in Reston, Va. The award is the highest honor that an organization can receive from BACCHUS.

At this conference, peer educators from across the country gather to share what they are doing on their campuses. Two FSU students, Veronica Morris and Emily Llewellyn and the organization’s advisor, Don E. Swogger, presented a program on “Building an Effective Health Promotion Campaign on Campus.” Robert Lemaire and Desiree Despertt, two other FSU students, supported the presentation through technological assistance.

BURG is a group of students who believe in empowering, educating and creating change among peers at FSU and in the community. They promote healthy choices on campus and provide recreational alternatives to drinking and drugging. BURG is a nationally certified peer education group through the BACCHUS Network. Its members serve as peer educators by presenting several educational programs and awareness campaigns on campus each year.

BURG is celebrating 26 years of excellence in peer education on the Frostburg campus. For more information about the BURG Peer Education Network, call the S.A.F.E. Office at 301-687-4761 or visit
