FSU American Chemical Society Student Chapter Honored

Frostburg State University’s chapter of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society (SAACS) has been selected to receive an Outstanding Chapter Award for its 2007-2008 activities. The FSU SAACS is one of only 40 outstanding chapters among more than 1,000 chapters overall to receive an Outstanding rating.

The American Chemical Society is the largest of its kind in the world with over 165,000 members. Dr. Don Weser has been the faculty advisor for the chapter for the past 31 years.

“Receiving an Outstanding Rating is a remarkable achievement, and a first for our SAACS organization,” Weser said. “This past year we had excellent leadership from the president, Christa Kucharczk, her officers and other members in spearheading many projects. It is through the combined and thorough efforts of the SAACS members that this level of national recognition by the ACS was attained.”

In past years, the chapter has received numerous Commendable or Honorable Mention awards. The FSU chapter was noted particularly for its efforts in community service, communication and recruiting new members from the chemistry and biology majors. The 2007-2008 ACS award-winning chapters will be recognized in the November/December issue of “In Chemistry” magazine and “Chemical and Engineering News.” The winners will also be presented with plaques for their efforts at the 237th ACS National Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Sunday, March 22, 2009. -end-
