FSU AmeriCorps Members Assist Red Cross with Tropical Storm Relief Efforts

Through a partnership with Frostburg State University’s A STAR! in Western Maryland AmeriCorps program and the Western Potomac Chapter of the American Red Cross, two AmeriCorps members recently assisted the Red Cross with disaster relief efforts in Louisiana and Texas.

After several days of disaster training with the Red Cross, Kathy Cunningham and Zach Fowler traveled to Lafayette, La., in mid-October to assist workers assisting families on the Gulf Coast who were affected by tropical storms Isadore and Lili. After two weeks in Louisiana, they continued their relief work for two weeks in Corpus Christi and another week near Houston.

Cunningham, of Cumberland, and Fowler, who lives in Oakland, helped families in need of food, clothing, shelter and other items damaged or destroyed by high winds and flooding.

“It was overwhelmingly satisfying to help,“ Cunningham said. “People were just so grateful. It was a wonderful experience.” She helped assess and document the damage to help the Red Cross provide needed items to families affected by the storms.

“Everybody involved was a volunteer, and all money was donated,” said Fowler. “It was a really good experience.”

Cunningham’s and Fowler’s work sites donated their time for the cause. Cunningham performs her service with the Western Maryland Area Health Education Center and with the Share Program. Fowler serves with the Garrett County Cooperative Extension Office and works with Brown Bag Teams Program.
