FSU an American Heart Association “Fit-Friendly Company” for Fourth Year

For the fourth year in a row, Frostburg State University has been recognized by the American Heart Association and Start! for maintaining its status as a “Gold-Level Start! Fit-Friendly Company.” This status puts FSU among an elite group of awardees and acknowledges the University’s efforts to promote and foster an institutional culture of health and physical activity in the workplace. FSU first received this award in March 2009.

“I am extremely pleased that FSU is maintaining its Fit-Friendly Company status and feel that this recognition opens doors for the University to continue developing a strong focus on health and wellness,” said FSU President Jonathan Gibralter. “Everyone at FSU who has been involved in promoting wellness in the workplace deserves recognition for their outstanding efforts in this area.”

The recognition by AHA acknowledges a year-long series of programs focusing on wellness, including many activities and events organized by FSU’s Office of Human Resources and CHILL (Creating Healthy, Informed, Lasting Lifestyles), a campuswide wellness initiative supported by a contribution from AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP. Highlights from FSU’s efforts to promote wellness include several workshops with wellness and fitness expert Scott Cole, as well as campus walks and other activities focusing on exercise and stress management. FSU also added the AstraZeneca Fitness Center to its renovated Lane University Center, which opened in spring of 2011. Recognizing the health problems associated with first- and secondhand smoke and wishing to provide a healthier environment for students, faculty, staff, alumni and visitors, FSU became a smoke-free campus on Aug. 1, 2011.

The Fit-Friendly Company Gold-Level award will help FSU become increasingly known as an institution committed to fostering wellness at the workplace and allow it to continue partnering with the AHA in offering resources, materials and consultation that support the University’s workplace wellness endeavors. As part of maintaining this status, FSU is recognized on the AHA’s website as well as at local AHA events in Maryland. The AHA will also continue to list FSU in various communication materials supporting the recognition program. Additionally, the University gets a recognition plaque to display in its Human Resources office, where both current and prospective employees will be able to see the award and learn how FSU is committed to wellness.

“Our renewed designation is valid through January 2013,” said April Baer, project coordinator for University Wellness. “We are now able to use this information to promote the campus through recruitment of students and employees as we were able to do so last year.”
