FSU Chamber Choir and Dr. Joan DeVee Dixon to Present

The Frostburg State University Chamber Choir and organist Joan DeVee Dixon will present “Czech Heritage Mass” at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Frostburg on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 4 p.m. Dr. Karen Soderberg-Sarnaker will conduct.

The “Czech Heritage Mass” (“Polka Mass”) by Dixon was commissioned by the Czech Heritage Partnership in Spillville, Iowa. The music draws on several influential Czech hymns and chants, in addition to polkas and waltzes. The work also includes a tribute to Dvorak, who spent the summer of 1893 in Spillville, playing regularly each morning on the same 1876 Pfeffer organ that remains there today.

Soderberg-Sarnaker, director of Vocal and Choral Activities at FSU, is also musical director of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Cumberland and the Cumberland Choral Society. She is active as a guest conductor, solo performer, adjudicator and clinician throughout the tri-state region and the Pacific Northwest.

The FSU Chamber Choir, the premier choral ensemble at FSU, is open to students by audition. With an emphasis on musical excellence, a full academic year commitment is required for participation. The FSU Chamber Choir places a premium on individual musicianship and refined technique, with particular attention to style and authenticity in performance. Respected for its outstandingly wide-ranging repertoire, the choir has performed throughout the tri-state region and internationally. Most notable was the choir’s tour of China in spring 2008.

St. John’s Episcopal Church is located at 58 Broadway, Frostburg. This musical performance and mass in honor of St. Wenceslaus Day will be celebrated by the Rev. Anne Weatherholt.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact St. John’s Episcopal Church at 301-689-6634 or the FSU Department of Music at 301-687-4115. You may also visit
