FSU Chamber Choir Presents “A Choral Tapestry” Winter Concert

Frostburg State University Chamber Choir presents its Winter Choral Concert “A Choral Tapestry” on Sunday, Dec. 5, at 3 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of the campus Performing Arts Center. The Chamber Choir is under the direction of Dr. Karen Soderberg-Sarnaker with Betty Jane Phillips, accompanist.

The concert will include “Songs for the Soul” with a setting of “Ave Maria” by Javier Busto, “A Hymn to the Virgin” by Benjamin Britten and the seasonal spiritual “Here’s a Pretty Little Baby” by André Thomas.

The second part, “Songs Without Words,” consists of “Air” by George Frederic Handel and arranged by Ward Swingle, “Fäbodpsalm från Dalarna,” arranged by Anders Öhrwall and “Solfeggio” by Arvo Pärt.

Part three, “Song for the Spirit,” features Stephen Leek’s “Uluru,” expressing the most sacred of all Aboriginal spiritual places. Ayres Rock is where the creation of Dreamtime took place and it is here, for Australian Aborigines, that all life began.

The fourth section, “Songs for the Season,” are settings of vocal jazz arrangements of “Christmas Time is Here,” arranged by Tina Chinn, “A Child Is Born,” arranged by Michele Weir and featuring alto Heather Footen, and Ward Swingle’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas.”

The Chamber Choir will conclude its performance with “Songs with a Swing,” which includes “Straighten Up and Fly Right,” arranged by Kirby Shaw, “Stachmo,” based upon “The Entertainer” by Scott Joplin and arranged by Ward Swingle and Manhattan Transfer’s choreographed arrangement of “Trickle, Trickle,” featuring tenor Daniel Durr.

Admission for this event is $5 for adults and $2 for students. Tickets can be reserved by calling 301-687-7462 and will also be available at the door.
