FSU Cultural Events Series to Present "Copacabana - the Musical"

Take a break from winter this January at Frostburg State University with Barry Manilow's "Copacabana - the Musical." FSU's Cultural Events Series and sponsor Best Western Braddock Motor Inn will present shows at 7:30 p.m. on Friday the 17th at 8 p.m. and Saturday the 18th at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Drama Theatre. Arts Getaway Packages and Dinner Show Packages are available with all performances.

Set in the glamorous 40's world of the famous Copacabana nightclub, when "music and passion were always in fashion," this musical extravaganza follows the adventures of the same Lola made famous in Barry Manilow's 1978 Grammy-winning song.

"It is feel-good entertainment with plenty of splash and the kind of score that you actually find yourself humming when you wake up the next morning," says the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Lola Lamar, a showgirl wannabe from Tulsa, Okla., stumbles from one disastrous audition to another until Tony Starr, a bartender at the renowned Copacabana nightclub, takes her under his wing. Of course, they fall in love, and Lola becomes a star. And, of course, trouble follows; the villainous Rico abducts Lola to Havana to work in his own club. So Tony sets off to save her in the best tradition of theatrical derring-do.

An affectionately splashy tribute to the backstage movie musical of the '40s, this tale of old-fashioned love, jealousy and murder unfolds amidst dazzling costumes, spectacular sets and sensational choreography.

The Arts Getaway Package transforms a performance ticket into a delightful getaway for two, with a choice of accommodations at LaVale's Best Western Braddock Motor Inn or the Downtown Cumberland Holiday Inn. Included with one night's stay is breakfast and dinner for two, a special welcome gift at check-in, round-trip transportation between the hotel and FSU's Performing Arts Center and two preferred seating tickets for the CES performance of your choice.

The Dinner Show Packages, available at seven area restaurants, will turn a performance into a special occasion. Participating restaurants include the Acropolis Restaurant & Lounge, El Canelo Mexican Restaurant, Gandalf's Restaurant & Pub, Gehauf's Restaurant, Giuseppe's Italian Restaurant, Harrigan's Restaurant and the Tombstone Café. Complimentary transportation is available. Reservations can be made up to two days before the performance date when purchasing performance tickets. Patrons pay the restaurant of choice after the completion of their meal.

For ticket prices and purchases, call or visit the CES Box Office, Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Office is located at Frostburg State University in the Lane University Center, Room 235, and can be reached at (301) 687-3137 or toll-free at 1-(866) TIXX CES.
