FSU Department of Geography Welcome Dr. Bernard Hubbard

Frostburg State University’s Department of Geography will host Dr. Bernard Hubbard on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m. in Gunter Hall room 208. Hubbard’s talk is called “From Alaska to Afghanistan: USGS Mineral Resource Investigations of Inaccessible Areas Using Spaceborne Remote Sensing Imagery” and is part of Geography Awareness Week.

Hubbard has been a research geologist with USGS in Reston, Va., since 2001. His research interests include a variety of geologic applications of remote sensing and geographic information systems, which is the focus of this talk. Hubbard will explore the possibilities of discovering inaccessible areas via satellites.

Hubbard has focused on a variety of topics during his years in research, including topographic modeling of landscapes and volcanic flows, impacts of land use/land cover change on soil erosion and water quality in the Chesapeake Bay, imaging spectroscopy for geologic mapping and mineral resource assessments in inaccessible places such as Afghanistan and characterizing clay minerals formed in different geologic environments.

This event is sponsored by the Frostburg Chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon (the student honor society for geography) and the Geography Club. For more information about Geography Awareness Week or this event, contact the Department of Geography at 301-687-4369.
