FSU Launches 2001-2002 International Film Series with "Kippur"

Frostburg State University's 2000-2001 International Film Series begins with "Kippur" on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. in Lane University Center room 201. The series is sponsored by Center Stage and the Department of Student & Community Involvement.

Sometimes called the Israeli version of "Saving Private Ryan, " this film, released in 2000, offers a straightforward and realistic look at the Yom Kippur war from the unique perspective of an Israeli helicopter rescue team. Like many modern war films, it reveals the chaotic face of war. This film attempts to document a traumatic time in Israeli history through sights, sounds and emotions for posterity, free from rhetoric or patriotic flag waving. Director Amos Gitai actually fought in this war and almost died in a helicopter crash. In Hebrew with English subtitles, "Kippur" runs for about two hours.

The remaining films of this year's series include the following titles:

* "Who the Hell is Juliet?" - Tuesday, October 2

* "The Ice Rink" - Tuesday, November 6

* "Himalaya" - Tuesday, February 5

* "Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train" - Tuesday, March 5

* "Rodrigo D: No Future" - Tuesday, April 2

* "The Legend of Rita" - Tuesday, May 7

All film showings are free and open to the public. For information, contact the Lane University Center Information Desk at 301-687-4411.
