FSU Named One of Best Values in Maryland by SmartAsset
04/02/2015

Frostburg State University has been listed as number four of the 10 colleges providing the best value in Maryland by SmartAsset, a financial data and technology company.

To identify more realistically the cost of attending a school, SmartAsset included the tuition (using in-state tuition for public schools where applicable), student living costs (including room and board, books, supplies, transportation and other personal expenses) and the average scholarships and grants offered to students of the school. To capture what students get in return, the company looked at student retention rate (the percent of students that re-enrolled at the institution the following year) and the average starting salary.

SmartAsset weighted each of the five factors equally to come up with a ranking of schools in the analysis. With that ranking, they created an index (a sort of grading on a curve) where the number one school was assigned 100. FSU’s Education Affordability Index is 68.22.

In-state undergraduate tuition at FSU totals $5,916. According to SmartAsset, average scholarships and grants amount to $6,343, student living costs average $10,606, the student retention rate is 77 percent and the average starting salary of a recent graduate is $40,100. In addition to its state rank, FSU ranked 154th nationally.
