FSU Offers Free Theatre Workshop for Educators

The Frostburg State University Cultural Events Series and the FSU Children’s Literature Centre present an evening of arts and literature on Thursday, Sept. 25. The evening is planned as part of the CES production of Box of Light Theatre’s “Peter Pan,” and the Children’s Literature Centre Fall Author Series.

Box of Light Theatre Artistic Director Rand Whipple will present an interactive workshop, "Encore, Encore," for teachers and future educators on Sept. 25, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Frostburg City Place. In this free, 90-minute session, Whipple will share ways of using active theatre games in the classroom to involve and animate children. The workshop will include a demonstration with elementary school students and a brainstorming session. Participants will have the opportunity to share ideas with other educators, get information on granting opportunities, and how to bring the arts into the school system.

Beverages will be served and free pizza will follow. RSVP to Susan Manger at (301) 687-7420 or The workshop is limited to 45 participants

A choice of related activities follow.

At 7:30p.m., also at Frostburg City Place, the FSU Children’s Literature Centre Fall Author Frank Murphy will speak. Murphy, a second-grade teacher in Newtown, Pa., loves to chase stories from the past. His first book, "The Legend of the Teddy Bear," took him nearly two years to write. His other works include "Always Inventing- The True Story of Thomas Alva Edison" and "Ben Franklin and the Magic Squares." His latest book, "George Washington and the General’s Dog" has just been released by Random House. The program is appropriate for all ages. For more information, contact the Children's Literature Centre at (301) 687-4420.

Also at 7:30 p.m., Box of Light Theatre present "Peter Pan" at the FSU Performing Arts Center Drama Theatre. In this 21st century adaptation of J. M. Barrie's classic, two performers guide 15 puppets through a computer-generated set that is a visual wonder. Join Wendy, Michael and John Darling as they take flight with Peter Pan and meet the rambunctious residents of Never Never Land. Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for children and can be purchased by calling (301) 687-3137.

This project is partially sponsored by a grant from Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour, a program developed and funded by the Vira I.
