FSU Offers Math Camp, SAT Training This Summer

Area students will have an opportunity to enhance their math skills at Frostburg State University this summer, with four weeklong sessions of Math Camp for students entering grades four through seven and an SAT math training program.

Sessions I and II of the Math Camp will be June 21 to 24; sessions III and IV will be June 28 to July 1. All sessions will be on campus in the FSU math lab in Dunkle Hall 211.

Sessions I and III, from 9 a.m. to noon, are for fourth and fifth graders. Students will explore Arithmetrix, tricks to use to solve arithmetic problems quickly. They will also explore some basic algebra, geometry and probability, with an emphasis on fun problems.

Sessions II and IV, from 1 to 4 p.m., are for sixth and seventh graders. Students will explore George Polya's four-step problem solving logic: Understand a problem, devise a plan, carry out the plan and look back. They will explore different strategies such as guess and check, graphs and tables, working backwards or setting up equations.

The SAT Math Training program will run from July 12 to Aug. 11 and will be held every Monday and Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. in Dunkle Hall 211. Instruction will include a one-hour lecture, 90-minutes of online practice, and a 30-minute question and answer period.

Instructor for all the classes will be Dr. Laxman Hegde, who has taught in the FSU Mathematics Department for the past 12 years.

Registration forms or more information can be obtained by calling Hegde at (301) 687-4384 (day), (301) 729-5179 (evening) or e-mailing Class sizes are limited to 25 students per session. Cost for the Math Camp is $40; cost for 10 sessions of the SAT training is $200.
