FSU Offers Read to Succeed for Grades K-8

Frostburg State University’s A STAR! in Western Maryland is accepting applications for its Read to Succeed! program. This program is for students in kindergarten through the eighth grade in Allegany, Mineral and Garrett counties. The program aims to raise students’ academic achievement levels by 15 percent while instilling a love of learning to enhance a child’s self-esteem.

Read to Succeed! promotes positive learning skills while targeting each child’s individual needs. All students are welcome to attend the program, and parents are welcome to observe mentoring sessions. The program provides one-on-one assistance for students who have problems in literacy and mathematics. Middle school students will receive higher education preparation information concerning study habits and time management skills. All mentors are trained volunteers from the FSU student community.

The Read to Succeed! program operates Monday through Thursday nights at two main sites in Allegany County: the South Cumberland Library and Frostburg State University. Applications are accepted throughout the school year on a first-come, first-served basis.

For more information, contact A STAR! volunteer coordinator Jamie Williams at 301-687-4191 or
