FSU Peer Education Network Earns Awards at Regional Conference

Frostburg State University’s BURG Peer Education Network received four awards, including a top honor, at the NASPA/BACCHUS Region 12 Annual Spring Conference on April 5, held at Radford University in Virginia.

BURG was named an Outstanding Peer Education Network, the highest honor of the conference, for consistent leadership and a comprehensive approach to peer education. BURG was also honored for Outstanding Contribution to Education in recognition of its freshman year initiative program. Don Swogger, BURG advisor for the past 24 years, won Advisor of the Year, and FSU senior Sam Hammett was awarded Region 12 Outstanding Student for her four years of leadership and successful campaigns on body image and sexual health.

Several students also gave presentations during breakout sessions. Hammett and freshmen Laurinda Patton and Kaelan Keller presented “Myth Busters: Challenging Misperceptions About Campus Life.” Freshmen Anna Aponesto, Kristie Whiteman and Greglena Sanders led a talk on BURG campaign topics, including positive body image, nutrition, eating disorders and loving oneself. Swogger presented “Ignite the Fire: Getting Back Into the Game,” a motivational session.

Other students participating in the conference were junior Bobby Lemaire and freshmen Jonathan Grams and Alejandro Portillo Romero.

The BURG Peer Education Network is a student organization whose members encourage healthy choices among their fellow students. For more information, visit or contact Don Swogger at 301-687-4761.
