FSU Presents “Einstein Centennial Lecture” to Kick Off World Year of Physics 2005

Frostburg State University is joining organizations from the world of physics in celebrating Einstein’s “Miraculous Year” of 1905 during the World Year of Physics 2005. FSU, under the sponsorship of its Faculty Development Subcommittee, will launch its series of events with the “Einstein Centennial Lecture” by Dr. Sylvester James Gates, Jr., on Thursday, Nov. 18, at 8 p.m. in the Compton Science Center, room 226.

Gates is the John S. Toll Professor of Physics at the University of Maryland College Park. He is a recognized authority on both the particle and string theory in physics. His lecture will incorporate Einstein’s legacy in gravitation, relativity and the evolution of the universe. On Friday, Nov. 19, from 9 to 9:50 a.m., Gates will present a physics seminar for faculty and students and then follow with an open meeting with the community from 10 to 10:50 a.m. To attend, contact Linda Steele at 301-687-4137 or

The World Year of Physics 2005 celebration at FSU will continue with the “It’s About Time” panel discussion on Monday, March 14, and the faculty lecture “Einstein Lived Here?” on Monday, April 18.
