FSU Presents Faculty Achievement Awards on May 20

Frostburg State University will present three professors with Faculty Achievement Awards during this year’s University Honors Convocation at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 20, in the Pealer Recital Hall, FSU Performing Arts Center.

This year’s recipients include Dr. Fritz C. Kessler for Academic Accomplishment, Dr. Robert M. Moore III for University/Community Service and Ms. Kathleen H. Powell for Teaching.

Kessler’s academic career is defined by his research in the areas of cartography and geographic visualization. He has co-authored a textbook, published several articles in refereed journals, presented extensively throughout the nation and created several maps. Members of his profession praise his focused and outstanding research and map development. His upcoming sabbatical research will examine an individual’s cognitive interpretation of distortion diagrams on map projection. Graduates of his courses have gone on to rewarding careers with such companies as National Geographic, EarthSAT, the U.S. Army Topographical and Engineering Center, the U.S. Military at West Point and the U.S. Central Command Operations Iraqi Freedom.

Moore is recognized for his service to FSU students through offering independent study courses, working with student organizations and promoting awareness of the sociological profession on the FSU campus. Students Organizing Encouraging and Educating About Diversity raised over $6,000 under his guidance to bring descendants of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings to the FSU campus. The African American Studies Society was organized with the help of Moore. He also advises a group of students called “Crossing Boundaries,” founded for those who are crossing a racial or religious boundary in a romantic relationship. In addition, Moore has been active in the Pennsylvania Sociological Society and serves as the Coordinator of African American Studies at FSU.

Powell’s accomplishments in the area of teaching are reflected in the outstanding evaluations and recommendations from her students in social work, honors seminars and the leadership studies program. Her dedication to genuine relationships, ethical practice and compassion all speak to her integrity. Students praise her for her willingness to go beyond the classroom to help students succeed in the world of social work. Powell is noted for her sincere interest, not just in the subject matter she teaches, but also in the students themselves. Her guidance of FSU students as they face their internships and professional lives has inspired them to take on the challenging career of social work.

In addition to the Faculty Achievement Awards, the University Honors Convocation recognizes students who have earned Graduate Program Honors. Undergraduate Department Honors and Honors in General Education.
