FSU Presents Geography Lectures by Professor Alexander B. Murphy

Alexander B. Murphy, professor of geography at the University of Oregon, will present two lectures at Frostburg State University. “Geography to Cope with a Fast-Changing World” will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 5 p.m. in the Lane University Center 140-141 and “Environmental Science, Foreign Policy Links” will be held Thursday, Nov. 4, at 5 p.m. in the Compton Science Center 226.

Murphy believes that we need to confront the major issues of today by bringing political geographic perspectives into clear view. His first lecture will focus on four major themes: Changing geopolitical fault lines (with a focus on questions of Arab/Islamic unity), new spaces of political-territorial governance (with a focus on the EU), the causes and consequences of conflict (with a focus on Iraq) and the implications of different policy approaches to international crises (with a focus on Bosnia).

Murphy’s second lecture will focus on examining the institutional and theoretical challenges of enhancing interactions between environmental scientists and foreign policy makers. He will consider the implications of foreign policy makers discounting scientific findings, the spaces of scientific analysis versus the spaces of policy analysis, how scientific inquiry often gets hammered into spatial frameworks that fit the practice of foreign policy, developments of concern to foreign policy analysts and how scientific inquiries often underscore the limitations of actions at the scale of individual states.

The lectures are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Dr. George White, Gunter Hall 232 or call 301-687-4264.
