FSU Presents Mapapa African Acrobats for Parents' Weekend

Family fun is coming to Frostburg State University's Cordts Center Main Arena from Africa, when the Mapapa African Acrobats present a unique show that has been a hit with audiences and critics around the globe. The Acrobats will bounce, bop and balance to a joyful Benga beat while combining ancient Chinese acrobatics with East African dance moves.

The Acrobats will perform on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 8:30 p.m. as part of the Endless Summer theme of FSU's Parents' Weekend 2000 and its Cultural Events Series.

Described as part Cirque du Soleil and part Harlem Globetrotters, the group's leader Matano Ismael says, "We are an African circus show with dancing." Included are balancing acts, tumbling, hoop jumping, contortions and a fire show. And just to liven things up, the Acrobats like to lure members of the audience into conga lines, limbo contests and rope skipping.

Raves from audiences and critics have followed the Acrobats since their 1999 arrival in the U.S. from their native Kenya. Three months after their U.S. debut, the troupe began a string of performances for almost every NBA team and soon opened tours for such popular acts as Monica and Blackstreet. They have just completed an original CD, "World Traveler," blending contemporary world music trends with African styles.

This event is presented in partnership with the FSU Campus Activities Board.

For information and ticket reservations, contact the CES Box Office in the Lane Center, Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., at 301-687-4411. Based on availability, tickets may also be purchased at the Cordts Center box office an hour before the show.
