FSU Professor Offers Math Camp This Summer

Area students will have an opportunity to enhance their math skills working with a Frostburg State University math professor this summer, with weeklong sessions of Math Camp for students entering grades four through seven.

Sessions I and II of the Math Camp will be June 25-29; sessions III and IV will be July 9-13. All sessions will be on campus in the FSU math lab in Dunkle Hall 211. There is some variation among the sessions.

Sessions I and III, from 9 a.m. to noon, are for fourth and fifth graders. Students will explore Arithmetrix, tricks to use to solve arithmetic problems quickly. They will also explore some basic algebra, geometry and probability, with an emphasis on fun problems. There will also be plenty of Web-based problem solving activities.

Sessions II and IV, from 1 to 4 p.m., are for sixth and seventh graders. Students will explore George Polya's four-step problem solving logic: Understand a problem, devise a plan, carry out the plan and look back. They will explore different strategies such as guess and check, graphs and tables, working backwards or setting up equations. Students will also be introduced to networks and graphs.

Instructor for all the classes will be Dr. Laxman Hegde, who has been teaching mathematics for more than 25 years, the past 15 years in the FSU Mathematics Department.

Cost for the Math Camp is $75. Class sizes are limited to 25 students per session.

Registration forms or more information can be obtained by calling Hegde at (301) 687-4384 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. or (301) 318-6003 or e-mailing Payment and registration can be sent to Prof. Hegde, Dept. of Math, Frostburg State University, 101 Braddock Road, Frostburg, MD 21532.
