FSU Professor Offers Math for High Schoolers This Summer

Area high school-aged students will have an opportunity to enhance their math skills working with a Frostburg State University math professor this summer, with a weeklong session at FSU’s new Center for Applied Statistics Explorations (CASE) for graduating seniors and students entering grades nine through 12 Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The title of the course is Mathematical Modeling With Teach-nology and focuses on using teach-nology (teaching with technology) to develop mathematical power — understanding, using and appreciating mathematics. Journal writing, real-world problem-solving activities, research activities, online quizzes, cooperative learning activities and individual/group presentations are among the techniques to be used.

The instructor for all the classes will be Dr. Laxman Hegde, who has been teaching mathematics for more than 27 years, the past 15 years in the FSU Mathematics Department.

The cost for the course is $225. Financial aid is available. All sessions will be on campus in Dunkle Hall 218 and the computer lab in Tawes 108.

Include the student's name and address, current grade level, current GPA, a list of high school math/statistics courses studied, a phone number, e-mail address, SAT math score (if available) and any other special comments regarding math abilities or future interest in math. Registration forms are due Friday, July 17. Payment is not required until the student has been accepted to the course.
