FSU Receives Second Grant from mtvU

For the second year in a row, Frostburg State University has received a grant from mtvU, MTV’s 24-hour college network. This year, the funds will be used to support the establishment of a HallSTARS! Alumni chapter to serve in partnership with the FSU Alumni Association.

Laura Strong, FSU student and HallSTARS! AmeriCorps alum, secured the $500 from mtvU which reaches over 700 campuses nationwide. Throughout the year, mtvU grants are awarded to teams of young people at mtvU partner schools who have proposed a new, sustainable community service or social entrepreneurship project which addresses a well-documented need within the community. The grants are hope that it will help students jumpstart their visions for social change within the community.

“Laura worked tirelessly and not only led and wrote the grant, but she single handedly defended the grant in a phone interview to a national panel,” said Cheri Krug, director of FSU’s Center for Volunteerism and National Service.

HallSTARS! is designed to integrate students with community service activities, as well as educational coursework within the AmeriCorps Education Awards Program. Students may receive up to $1,500 in educational awards after completing 381 hours of service, training and general education courses.

Thirteen service projects have been identified this fall for the new HallSTARS! Alumni Chapter. Projects include the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk on Sunday, Sept. 25, located in Frederick, Md.; Help the Homeless Walkathon on Friday, Nov. 18, and Saturday, Nov. 19, in Washington, D.C.; the Spring 2006 C & O Canal Clean-up on Saturday, March, 25, in Cumberland, Md.; and others.
