FSU Students Help Frostburg Take Ride Back to 1938 in Documentary

Frostburg State University Leadership Studies minor students are bringing back the 1938 scene of Frostburg’s Main Street in the documentary film “Frostburg 1938.” A screening of the documentary, which relives a historical moment of Frostburg, will take place on Thursday, May 15, at 7 p.m. at City Place in Frostburg (on the corner of Mechanic and Water streets).

Andrew Spencer, a business management major, coordinated the documentary which began as four 16mm film clips. Liberal Studies major Suzy Mangas and Political Science major Ikea Pickett, both Leadership Studies minors, helped Spencer edit the clips and narrative together.

Spencer received the clips from Barbara Armstrong of FrostburgFirst, a Maryland Main Street Community organization founded in 2000 with encouragement from the City of Frostburg and guidance from the Frostburg Business and Professional Association. With the help of Frostburg citizens from the 1938 generation, the film clips were given narration. To gain information for the historical narrative, Spencer researched archives at local libraries and senior centers.

An open discussion featuring citizens from the documentary as well as FSU students and faculty will follow the screening. Light refreshments will be served. For more information on the screening, contact Dr. Elesha L. Ruminski, FSU Assistant Professor of Communication Studies and Co-Coordinator of the Leadership Studies Minor at 301-687-4480 or
