FSU Students Win Competition at Annual Meeting

Frostburg State University students were awarded first and second place at this year’s annual meeting of the Southeastern Chapter of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Services (SE INFORMS) held in Myrtle Beach, S.C., in October.

Every year as part of its annual meeting, SE INFORMS hosts a student paper competition in which student papers are accepted in the competition after the blind review process. A panel of judges awards the papers first, second and third place with monetary awards.

The two papers were submitted by FSU College of Business MBA students. The first one was titled “Wal-Mart: Low Prices or Low Values?” written by Adrienne Everline of Westernport, Md.; Christie Files of Cumberland, Md.; Donald Hetrick of Keyser, W.Va.; Robert Medley of Lexington Park, Md.; and Danielle Willetts of LaVale, Md. The paper was presented at the conference by Files, Hetrick and Medley. The second paper was titled “The Internet Safety Debate,” by Crystal Ellis of Accokeek, Md.; Ian Faulkner of Boston, Mass.; and Alicia Helbig of Oakland, Md. The paper was presented by Ellis. Each of these winners received a travel scholarship and monetary rewards.

“We all in the College of Business are very proud of our students’ accomplishments. These types of competitive participation and winning conferences brings tremendous positive publicity and gives the external validation of the wonderful job our students and faculty do at Frostburg,” said Dr. Amit Shah, an FSU management professor and president of the SE INFORMS conference.

The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) is the largest society in the world for professionals in the field of operations research. The society organizes national and international conferences for academics and professionals, as well as members of the society's special interest groups.
