FSU to Host 2011 Family Weekend

Frostburg State University will host its annual Family Weekend from Friday, Sept. 23, through Sunday, Sept. 25. There will be a wide array of events for students and their families to enjoy, most free and open to the public.

The events begin Friday at 8 p.m. in Lane University Center Alice R. Manicur Assembly Hall with “Salsa Magic,” sponsored by Delta Zeta and the University Programming Council. The night is then capped off with a showing of the movie “Kung Fu Panda 2” in Lane room 111.

Saturday begins with an art show in Lane University Center’s south addition. It is sponsored by Kappa Pi and will be held all day. Los Quicho’s Shelter Service project, sponsored by Alpha Phi Omega, will be available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lane in the second floor lobby. The Stephanie Ann Roper Gallery will also be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday; works from the Women’s Caucus for Art of Greater Washington are on exhibit.

There are plenty of events on Saturday for all to enjoy. If you enjoy dancing, then try the Project Belly Dancing Session at 11 a.m. in the Lane Derezinski Lounge. The Lane game room will be open from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m.; bring your family and challenge them to Xbox 360, Wii or Playstation 3. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. will be Passport FSU; this event will consist of a walking tour visiting various academic departments. The tour will begin at the Compton Science Center. If you’re looking for some really good food, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will be a Taste the World event in the Lane Atkinson Room (232). The Appalachian Station food court, located on Lane Center’s second floor, will also be opening at the same time.

Come support FSU’s football team as they square off against Randolph-Macon at 1 p.m. in Bobcat Stadium. Derezinski Lounge will host performances all afternoon, starting at 1 p.m. with Dr. Greg Latta performing on Celtic dulcimer, then an African dance performance by Tinkus Sansimon at 2 p.m. and a Latin American Student Organization dance performance at 3 p.m. And there will be re-showings of “Kung Fu Panda 2” at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Lane room 111. At 5 p.m., Mountain Ridge High School’s jazz band will be performing at the Lyric Building on Main Street; there will be trolleys for transportation from the Performing Arts Center parking lot. Also from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., there will be a Saturday Arts Walk on Main Street. The night will conclude with the exciting Chinese Acrobats of Hebei from 8 to 10 p.m. in Cordts Physical Education Center’s main arena. For ticket information visit or call 301-687-3137.

At 8 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday will be performances of the winners of the Second Annual One-Act Festival at the Palace Theater on Main Street. This event will feature the winning plays of the FSU One-Act Play Competition and include “Life After Life” by Karen Hartline, “Hattie’s Dress” by Walter Vall and “Closing Time” by Carl Williams.

Family Weekend will conclude on Sunday with an 11:45 a.m. worship service at the Cook Chapel.
