FSU to Offer Master of Education in School Counseling at USMH

Frostburg State University has been approved to offer its Master of Education with a concentration in School Counseling program through the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown (USMH), with the first students being accepted for the fall 2015 semester.

FSU has offered a graduate degree in school counseling at its Frostburg campus since the 1970s. The program, offered full- or part-time, is designed for those with a bachelor’s degree who want to pursue a career as a school counselor working with students in grades kindergarten through 12. Classes are offered in the evening to accommodate students who would like to pursue the degree while working; however, an internship is required in the schools during the last semester of the program.

“We are proud to expand this program into Hagerstown as another way to enhance educational opportunities for the region’s residents and meet the needs of schools in the state of Maryland,” said FSU Interim President Tom Bowling.

“Frostburg is a strong partner with USMH in providing a variety of educational options to area students,” said Mark Halsey, USMH executive director. “This expansion of FSU’s already robust array of education programs offered at USMH will benefit local students while responding to workforce demands of the region.”

The program is designed in accordance with the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs Standards for School Counseling and is accredited by the Maryland State Department of Education. Graduates would be eligible to seek certification as a school counselor.

The degree also offers preparation for other careers, such as admissions counselors or behavioral specialists in social service and educational organizations.

An information session offering details about the program and the application and admission process will be held on Wednesday, July 29, at 5 p.m. at USMH, 32. W. Washington St. in Hagerstown. Registration is encouraged and can be completed online at or by phone at 301-687-7053.
