FSU to Present Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award at 140th Commencement
Frostburg State University will present the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award to former Maryland State Del. Gene Counihan, Class of ’63, at the 140th commencement ceremony slated for Saturday, May 19, in the Cordts Physical Education Center.

Counihan, of Montgomery Village, Md., will be honored at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony for the colleges of Business and Education. A founding brother of Sigma Tau Gamma, Counihan has been instrumental in keeping the men from his era connected throughout the years, and he recently spearheaded the establishment of the Sigma Tau Gamma Scholarship. A three-term state delegate representing Montgomery County, Counihan has also advocated for his alma mater. He is a founding father and a board member of the Universities at Shady Grove and is commissioner and vice chairman of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. He also had a 30-year tenure with Montgomery County schools as a teacher and administrator.

The Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award is one of the most prestigious honors bestowed on FSU alumni. Consideration is based on outstanding professional career growth; community involvement; demonstrated interest in their alma mater; philanthropic commitment to FSU; special achievements, awards, honors and distinctions; and/or educational background, which includes honors and involvement in special activities.
