FSU to Present Fourth Annual Service-Learning Colloquium Featuring Edward Zlotkowski

The Frostburg State University Institute of Service-Learning will present the Fourth Annual Service-Learning Colloquium and Luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Lane Center rooms 201-202. FSU faculty, students and local educators are invited to attend. This event is free, but pre-registration is requested.

Edward Zlotkowski, a senior associate at the American Association for Higher Education (AAHE), will be the keynote speaker. He is also a professor of English at Bentley College and a senior faculty fellow at Campus Compact.

Workshops planned for the Colloquium include:

Service-Learning 101: In this workshop, the novice will be provided with everything that he/she needs to know to get started in service-learning.

Bridging the Gap: This workshop will focus on how to create service-learning links between university and K-12 communities.

Service-Learning on a Shoestring: Creative ideas for developing inexpensive, yet high-quality service-learning activities and potential funding sources will be discussed.

Time to Reflect: This workshop will explore ways to create quality reflection activities to complement instructional goals and aid the teacher in evaluating the success of the project.

Balancing Act: Achieving balance between resources given and received by students and community partners will be the focus of this workshop.

Creative Combinations: Developing innovative strategies for combining service opportunities with curriculum goals will be discussed.

Testing...1,2,3: This workshop will focus on developing ways to assess and evaluate the educational viability of service-learning projects.

Service-Learning's Legacy and Future: Service-learning's impact on students, teachers, institutions and communities will be discussed.

Zlotkowski has published and spoken extensively on a wide range of service-learning topics, and regularly uses a service-learning approach in his own teaching.

In 1990, he founded the Bentley Service-Learning Project, an institution-wide program that has involved in its work all of the college's undergraduate academic departments, more than a quarter of its full-time faculty and several thousand students.

As a senior associate at AAHE since 1995, he has served as general editor of a monograph series exploring the relationship between service-learning and academic disciplines/disciplinary areas.

In 1999, Zlotkowski was named a senior faculty fellow at Campus Compact, where he was responsible for developing professional development opportunities in service-learning for provosts and deans as well as a series of summer institutes for engaged academic departments.
