FSU Winter Dance Concert Features Choreography by Alum Amelia Derezinski

FSU Winter Dance Concert Features Choreography by Alum Amelia Derezinski
A diverse range of styles, music and theatrical movement will come together in an exciting evening of dance when Frostburg State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance offers its Winter Dance Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 7 and Dec. 8 in the FSU Performing Arts Center. The concert will feature new choreography by FSU alumna Amelia Derezinski as well as works by FSU students and dance company coordinator Desiree Witt.

Creativity and spirited movement in a variety of styles, including tap, modern, hip-hop and jazz, are highlighted throughout the concert. Derezinski’s piece uses classroom desks to create a light-hearted, comedic ambiance. Witt’s work also relies on everyday objects in creative ways—her dance incorporates pillows. New choreography by dance company members Antonia deBarros, Danny Durr, Jonay Aiken, Jessica Seminerio, Grace Gonzalez, Kelly Jones and Katie Weedon complete the repertoire.

A guest choreographer at FSU, Derezinski recently returned to Frostburg after 11 years in New York City, where she directed two dance companies: Pirate Girl Productions and Torque Dance. Since earning her master’s degree in dance education from New York University, Derezinski has taught dance in the New York public school system; she currently teaches physical education at Allegany county schools. Derezinski is the author of two middle school dance texts, “Star Turns” and “Twyla Tharp,” and is also a licensed Gyrotonic instructor.

Tickets to the Winter Dance Concert are $5 for students and $10 for the general public. For reservations and information, please call (301) 687-7462, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or stop by the box office in the Performing Arts Center lobby between noon and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.
