FSU’s Center for Creative Writing Closes Semester with Rock ’n’ Read Fundraiser

Frostburg State University’s Center for Creative Writing wrapped up its events for the spring 2015 semester with a Rock ’n’ Read fundraiser on Sunday, May 3. The events included the Poetry Grand Slam, a public Sudden Slam, the opening of the Word & Image art project and live music. Proceeds from the fundraiser benefit the center.

In the Poetry Grand Slam, Jane Rittenhouse was awarded first place and the title of Grand Slam Champion, Nina Forsythe placed in second and Mercedes Hill placed in third. The winners were given gift certificates donated by local businesses, including SHiFT, Main Street Books and Giuseppe’s.

For the Sudden Slam, participants were tasked with writing a poem on the theme of music and performing it in front of a panel of judges. Local artist and musician R.K. Kyle received the highest scores for his poem about growing up with punk rock music and was awarded a Dante’s Bar gift card.

The Word & Image Project is a juried art exhibition in which submitters incorporated a poem into a work of art or created a work of art based on a poem. This year’s winners are Maggie Pratt, who won Best in Show; Alexandra Conley, who won the 2D Prize; FSU student Brian Rohrbaugh, who won the Student Prize; and Jody Walker, who won the 3D Prize. The winners’ artwork and other selected submissions are available for viewing and sale at Dante’s Bar, 14 W. Main St. in Frostburg, through May.
