FSU’s Don Swogger Named NASPA Outstanding Peer Education Advisor

NASPA – Student Affairs Professionals in Higher Education recently recognized Don Swogger, SAFE Office director and BURG advisor at Frostburg State University, as a 2015 BACCHUS Initiatives/NASPA Outstanding Peer Education Advisor at its annual awards banquet in November. Swogger was honored for his outstanding commitment and dedication in working with BURG Peer Education students at FSU for over 20 years.

Each year, NASPA honors some of the best professional staff working in the health and safety arena on college and university campuses. The Outstanding Peer Education Advisor awards are given to advisors that show commitment to peer education efforts, unique talents as a peer education advisor, leadership ability and presence as a positive role model for peer educators.

“Advising peer education groups is a unique opportunity for professional staff who must draw from a variety of disciplines and resources to assist the organization and to accomplish the campus’ mission and goals in achieving student learning and growth,” said Dr. Kevin Kruger, NASPA’s president. “Advisors guide students through the process of becoming credible educators, leaders and role models in health and safety initiatives while allowing them to learn and grow.”

BURG is a group of students who believe in empowering, educating and creating change among peers at FSU and in the community. They promote healthy choices on campus and provide recreational alternatives to drinking and drugging. BURG is a nationally certified peer education group through the BACCHUS Network. Its members serve as peer educators by presenting several educational programs and awareness campaigns on campus each year. BURG has won numerous national and regional awards.

The BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA support collegiate peer educators and advisors by empowering students and student affairs administrators to create campus environments that are healthy and safe.
