FSU’s Upward Bound Program Students Gain a Capitol Experience

Allegany County high school students who are members of the Upward Bound program at Frostburg State University recently took a field trip to Washington, D.C., where they visited the U.S. Capitol Building. The students got to take an in-depth tour of the building as well as experiencing a special tour of the Senate’s Brumidi corridor.

In the Brumidi corridor, students saw rooms with beautiful ceilings and walls designed by artist and architect Constantino Brumidi. Some of Brumidi’s work includes the huge fresco on the Capitol Dome in the rotunda titled “Apotheosis of Washington.” After touring the corridor, the students got to take a short ride on the Senate Subway to the Russell Senate Office Building.

After the eventful trip to Washington, D.C., the students also went to St. Mary’s County. The students pictured on the steps of the Capitol are, front row from left: Cheyenne Jeffries, Regine Jerome, Shannon Kelley, Katie Lick, Cierra Zarger, Shayla Goodman, Amber Emery and Tiffany Kennell. In the second row, from left, are James Riggs, Rachel Wormack, Marcus Bowers, Kevin Loftus, Austin Whetzel, Jaden O’Neal, Skylar Barbe, Kara Brown and Megan Girimonti.

The Upward Bound program of Frostburg State University is one of almost 800 national, federally funded, pre-college programs that are designed to provide high school students with the skills and motivation to succeed in high school and afterward in college.
