FSU’s Best Buddies Awarded Most Improved Chapter at National Conference

By Ashley Diggs, FSU News Intern

Frostburg State University’s Best Buddies chapter was awarded as the 2005-2006 Most Improved College Chapters at the 17th annual Best Buddies Leadership Conference in Bloomington, Ind.

Best Buddies is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment. Best Buddies is a international organization that has grown from one original chapter to more than 1,300 middle school, high school and college chapters across the country and internationally.

At FSU, the Best Buddies chapter forms partnerships with organizations and then uses these partnerships to enhance their friendships with their buddies. Each member is given a buddy and then they get to know their buddy and form a friendship. Students and their buddies go out together and do things that they both like and just have fun together.

FSU’s Best Buddies chapter is two years old and became recognized by the university last fall. The chapter started “from nothing and created four partnerships which was the most successful in the area, and that’s why we won the most improved award,” said Erin McElwee, president of Best Buddies here at FSU. “Now we have 20 partnerships so we deserved the award now more than we did then.”

The chapter is trying to get more students involved by going to talk to social work and education classes and working with members of the community.
