FSU’s Branch of Quality Deer Management Association to Host Seminar

The Frostburg State University branch of the Quality Deer Management Association will host a seminar on fetus measuring and jawbone aging on Saturday, March 3, at 9 a.m. in Gunter Hall 112 on the FSU campus. The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature guest speaker, E.W. Grimes, president of the Maryland State Quality Deer Management Association.

Fetus measuring involves measuring the lengths of fetuses collected from harvested does and calculating when the does were bred. This is used to look at timing of rut in a region and population sex ratios. Jaw bone aging involves looking at tooth eruption patterns and wear to determine the ages of deer, allowing managers to determine the age structure of deer populations.

QDMA is a nonprofit wildlife conservation organization that promotes ethical hunting, preservation of deer hunting heritage and sound deer management. The FSU branch works to give students hands-on experience in all aspects of deer management.

According to FSU Assistant Professor Thomas D. Lambert, the FSU branch of QDMA is the first student branch and is open to all FSU students interested in deer management and hunting. For more information on the seminar or the FSU branch of QDMA, contact Lambert at 301-687-4167 or
