Melmod wrote her first picture book, "The First Song Ever Sung," as a poem to answer a bedtime question from her son. The best-selling titles "I Love You As Much" and "The Rainbabies" soon followed. Her most recent title is "Capital! Washington D.C. from A to Z," a rhyming, fact-filled alphabetical tour through her adopted hometown.

A native of New York City, Melmed received a B.A. from SUNY Buffalo and an M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education from Tulane University. She serves as president of the Children's Book Guild of Washington, D.C.
