FSU's Department of English and Western Maryland's Writers' Workshop to Feature Daniel Mark Epstein

The Frostburg State University Department of English and Western Maryland Writers' Workshop will feature Baltimore writer Daniel Mark Epstein on Tuesday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the Lane University Center Room 201.

An award-winning poet, essayist, playwright, translator, biographer and musician, Epstein has read to enthusiastic audiences throughout Western Europe, Africa and the United States.

In his most recent collection, "The Traveler's Calendar," the poems -- by turns mysterious, tender, ironic and apocalyptic -- explore the healing power of poetry in times of crises. "A book of night thoughts, of the poet in the middle of his life peering backward, marveling at the mysteries, dramatizing other lives and daydreaming about his own, crafting his song with a gift and a passion, as he so forcefully puts it, 'for filling/Darkness with music'," notes poet Edward Hirsh.

Epstein's other recent publication, a biography of American poet Edna St. Vincent Millay entitled "What My Lips Have Kissed," is a "terrific volume," states The Kirkus Review. "Epstein presents Millay as an erotic dynamo whose serial sex encounters and rich love life inspired her finest poems."

The writer is the winner of the Prix de Rome and a Guggenheim Fellowship and an author of three biographies and seven volumes of poetry. A reception and booksigning will follow the 7:30 p.m. reading.

This event is free and open to the public. For further information, contact the FSU Department of English at (301) 687-4221.
