FSU’s Geography Department Welcomes Dr. Don Zeigler

Frostburg State University’s Department of Geography will host Dr. Don Zeigler on Thursday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. in Compton Science Center room 226. Zeigler will speak about “Persuasive Cartography and the Power of Place” as part of Geography Awareness Week.

According to Zeigler, maps are often subjectively designed to change opinions, shape politics, alter reality and undermine the truth. Often, the most biased maps are made to appear the most scientific. Zeigler’s presentation will provide an alternate way of looking at maps critically, so that whenever a map is used in textbooks, on billboards, on stamps and on money, the viewer can discern the underlying message.

Zeigler is a professor of geography at Old Dominion University in Virginia Beach, Va., teaching cultural and political geography. He is the president of Gamma Theta Upsilon, the international honor society in geography, and has been the president of the National Council on Geographic Education and chair of the AP Human Geography Development Committee. Zeigler co-edited the book “Cities of the World” and is revising his chapter, “Cities of the Greater Middle East.”

This event is sponsored by the Frostburg Chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon (the student honor society for geography) and the Geography Club. For more information about Geography Awareness Week or this event, contact the Department of Geography at 301-687-4369.
