FSU’s Mary Biscoe to Receive Florence Hood Miner Award From Delta Zeta National

FSU’s Mary Biscoe to Receive Florence Hood Miner Award From Delta Zeta National
The national organization of Delta Zeta Sorority has announced that Frostburg State University student Mary Biscoe has won the 2010-2011 Florence Hood Miner Award. The award is given to members of Delta Zeta who in their junior year have made the greatest contribution to their college, chapter and Delta Zeta through outstanding leadership on the campus, while maintaining a good academic record. Biscoe is one of only six Delta Zetas nationwide to receive this award.

Biscoe joined Frostburg’s chapter of Delta Zeta in spring 2009 and is currently the president of the sorority, which currently boasts 50 members at FSU. She is also the president of the Student Government Association, a member of the President’s Leadership Circle, vice president of membership for Order of Omega Greek Honor Society, member of Phi Eta Sigma Freshmen Honor Society and a Student Alumni Ambassador. Biscoe volunteers for various community service projects and is a frequent driver for FSU’s SafeRide program. She is the daughter of Debbie and Ray Biscoe of Prince Frederick, Md., and has made the Dean’s List five times. Biscoe plans to graduate in May 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in Law and Society, and Sociology. After graduation, she expects to continue her education by attending law school.

“I appreciate her drive, organizational skills and leadership ability,” said Jamie Winters, FSU assistant director of Student Activities and Greek Life and member of Delta Zeta sorority. “I really believe she has a true understanding of what it means to be a Delta Zeta.”

The Florence Hood Miner Award was first presented at the 1948 Convention in recognition of Miner’s service as national vice president, editor of The LAMP of Delta Zeta, historian emeritus and other national offices.

Delta Zeta Sorority was established at FSU in 1993; it was founded on Miami University's campus in Oxford, Ohio, in 1902. The Sorority has over 220,000 alumnae and collegiate members in the United States and Canada. For more information about Greek Life at FSU, contact Winters at 301-687-7398.
