FSU’s Timothy Powell to Perform Faculty Saxophone Recital

Frostburg State University Department of Music’s Faculty Artist Series presents Timothy Powell performing a saxophone recital at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, in the Pealer Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center. The performance is free and open to the public.

The program will include pieces such as “The Garden of Love” and “Grab It” by Jacob Ter Veldhuis, “Sax Notes” by Paul Steinberg, and “Getz Variations” by Dexter Morrill.

Powell, originally from the Philadelphia area, established himself as an active freelance musician in the Baltimore/Washington Metropolitan areas. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Pennsylvania State University, where he won numerous scholarships competitions. Powell received his Master of Music degree in jazz studies from the University of Maryland, College Park, and he is currently working towards a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in saxophone performance.

Powell is on the faculty at FSU, where he teaches applied saxophone, music appreciation, beginning jazz theory and improvisation. His accomplishments include performances with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Gloria Gaynor, Ben Folds, Frankie Avalon and Frank Sinatra, Jr.

The final piece of the performance, “Grab It,” contains language that some may find offensive. There will be a three-minute break before the final piece to allow those who don’t wish to hear it to leave. For more information, contact FSU’s Department of Music at 301-687-4109.
