Gov. Ehrlich Announces Funding for FSU Road Improvements, Greets New President, Dr. Jonathan Gibralter

On a visit to Frostburg State University, Gov. Robert Ehrlich today announced $2.7 million in funds from the state Capital Budget for changes to University Drive, a project that will greatly enhance the safety of students and campus visitors.

The road project's primary focus is designed to reroute University Drive, a state-funded thoroughfare, around the heavily traveled pedestrian crossings between the complex of residence halls and Chesapeake Dining Hall and the academic core of the campus. Steep grades, as high as 14 percent, and curves creating short sightlines are among the hazards to the road's current route. The designated funds also will cover improvements to the entrances of campus.

The Governor also greeted FSU's new president, Dr. Jonathan Gibralter, on his first official day on the job. President Gibralter, whose appointment was announced March 28 by University System of Maryland Chancellor William E. Kirwan, was previously president of Farmingdale State University of New York on Long Island. He was chosen following a nationwide presidential search.

Gibralter expressed his gratitude to the Governor for taking the time out of his busy schedule to welcome him to his new position as President of FSU. He also thanked Gov. Ehrlich for his enormous support of the entire University System of Maryland and particularly for supporting capital improvements at FSU.

"This roadway project will make the campus safer for students, faculty, staff and visitors to the campus," Gibralter said.

Situated in the mountains of Allegany County, Frostburg State University is one of the 13 institutions of the University System of Maryland. FSU is a comprehensive, residential regional university and serves as an educational and cultural center for Western Maryland. For more information, visit the Web site at
