Grabill Helps Lift Men's Basketball Past Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, PA — Senior Ryan Grabill (Boonsboro, Md./Williamsport) scored a game-high 23 points and added seven rebounds, four assists and four steals to lead Frostburg State to a 72-69 non-conference win over Waynesburg Monday night at Marisa Fieldhouse.

The Bobcats (10-9) and Yellow Jackets (6-13) traded the lead 11 times in the second half, the last when FSU sophomore Dan Ryley (Frederick, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall) sank a jumper with 1:07 left to give the visitors a 70-69 advantage.

Grabill then hit a pair of free throws with 26 seconds remaining, and Waynesburg's Marc Lodovico missed a potentional game-tying three-pointer with four ticks remaining.

Grabill posted his fourth straight 20-point effort and is averaging 22.3 points in his last four contests.

Frostburg State trailed by seven, 64-57, with 8:17 to play but went on an 8-0 run to move back in front.

Senior Myro Small (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) hit a jumper to start the outburst, and Grabill followed with the last of his five three-pointers on the night.

Small added another basket to forge a 64-64 tie, and senior DeNelle Hale (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) made a layup to give the Bobcats the lead again.

Nick Tomsko hit a three-pointer to put Waynesburg on top 67-66 with 4:43 left, and, after both teams went scoreless over the next minute, Ryley hit a jumper to give FSU a 68-67 edge.

Phil McLaughlin responded with a short jumper for the Yellow Jackets, and Ryley countered again with an offensive rebound and put-back to give the Bobcats the lead for good.

Waynesburg had a chance to move ahead yet again but missed the front end of a one-and-one with 39 ticks left, and Ryley pulled down the crucial rebound to help FSU seal the hard-fought win.

Grabill and Small lit up the scoreboard to start the game, combining for 17 of FSU's first 19 points.

However, Waynesburg kept pace by hitting five three-pointers in the first 10 minutes as the teams battled to a 23-23 tie.

The Yellow Jackets took a 33-29 lead with 6:32 left in the first half before the Bobcats scored six straight points.

Waynesburg answered to force a fifth tie, and the teams then traded four baskets and went into the lockerroom tied at 39.

Small scored 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting, while Ryley finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and a career-high five blocks.

Sophomore Steve Coursey (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) tied his season-high with 10 points and added six rebounds.

Beau Wilson led Waynesburg with 18 points, while Lodovico (13), Tomsko (12) and McLaughlin (10) also scored in double figures.

Frostburg State will host Grove City on Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
