Lacrosse Holds Off Virginia Wesleyan for Second Straight Win

NORFOLK, VA — Senior Melissa Lennon (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) scored the go-ahead goal with 10:38 remaining, and the Bobcat defense held Virginia Wesleyan without a shot on goal in the final three minutes to claim an 8-6 win over the host Marlins Sunday afternoon at Foster Field.

The Bobcats (2-0) added an insurance goal when junior Andrea Duffy (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) found the net with 5:43 left, and FSU held Virginia Wesleyan in check the remainder of the contest.

Two evenly matched teams battled move for move from the start, as neither squad was able to build a lead of more than one goal until late in the second half.

Frostburg State trailed, 3-2, at halftime as freshman Page Macey (Linthicum, Md./North County) scored both Bobcat goals in the opening stanza.

Fellow freshman Cathy Moffit (Severna Park, Md./Mt. de Sales) put the Bobcats ahead, 6-4, with 12:31 to play when she rolled in from the left to score an unassisted goal.

VWC (2-2) tied the contest with a pair of goals over the next 49 seconds. Senior Meagan DiCave drilled the ball into the cage just 33 seconds after Moffit's tally, and freshman Megan Parris evened things up on a breakaway just 16 seconds later.

FSU then called timeout, and Macey fed Lennon for the game-winning goal.

Macey, who scored seven goals in her collegiate debut in FSU's 16-6 win over Christopher Newport Saturday, added four more goals and an assist against VWC to lead all scorers. Lennon found the net twice, while Duffy and Moffitt each recorded a goal.

Sophomore Sarah Shockley (Fallston, Md./Fallston) made eight saves to earn the victory.

Frostburg State opens its home slate Saturday when it hosts Lynchburg College at 1:00 p.m.
