Lacrosse Rallies Past The College of Notre Dame

FROSTBURG, MD — The Frostburg State women’s lacrosse team came from behind to beat the College of Notre Dame (Md.) 11-10 in women’s lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon at Bobcat Field.

The Bobcats (5-5) opened the game with an early goal just 50 seconds into play by senior Stefanie Ritz (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright). One minute later, the Gators (7-4) tied the score at 1-1. Three consecutive goals pushed the COND lead to 4-1 with 22:33 on the game clock.

Back-to-back goals by Ritz and sophomore Carly Rihard (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) helped FSU come within 4-3, but Notre Dame answered with two consecutive goals to maintain its lead. With 3:55 on the clock, Ritz netted her third goal of the day to narrow the gap, 6-4, at intermission.

In the second half, the Gators found the net less than thirty seconds into action. Rihard responded with a goal off a feed from classmate Maria Schrum (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) to make the score 7-5.

Notre Dame scored again to extend its lead, but the Bobcats found the net three times, including two goals from Ritz and one from sophomore Lindsay Lamont (Sykesville, Md./Century), to tie the game at 8-8 with 16:59 left in regulation.

COND scored at 13:53 and 10:13 to give it a 10-8 lead. At 8:12, junior Brittany Brumby (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) netted a goal to come within 10-9. Rihard banked a shot at 6:15 to tie the game for the second time.

With 5:38 left in the game, the Notre Dame goalie stepped away from the net and lost the ball. Lamont picked it up and passed it to Schrum, who made the game-winning shot to cap the scoring.

Ritz lead the day with five goals and seven caused turnovers, while Rihard added three. Schrum had an impressive nine draw controls and added three assists.

Freshman Bobcat keeper Erin Morrell (Easton, Md./Easton) picked up 11 saves in the win, earning her tenth double-digit performance of the season.

FSU returns to action on Saturday April 15, as it hosts Scranton for a game beginning at noon.
