Lacrosse Uses Second-Half Rally to Edge Virginia Wesleyan

NORFOLK, VA — Sophomore Kelley Duncan (C. Milton Wright/Bel Air, Md.) scored with eight seconds left to lift Frostburg State to an exciting 10-9 win over Virginia Wesleyan Sunday afternoon.

The Bobcats (2-0) overcame a 9-5 deficit by scoring the final five goals, including four in the last 7:42.

Sophomore Kate Nicol (Glenelg/Mt. Airy, Md.) started the comeback with an unassisted goal with 20:08 remaining before the teams went nearly 13 minutes without finding the net.

Sophomore Stefanie Ritz (C. Milton Wright/Bel Air, Md.) scored her third goal of the day at 7:42 before freshman Brittany Brumby (Quince Orchard/Gaithersburg, Md.) followed at the 6:39 mark.

Just moments later, Ritz notched the last of her four goals to pull the Bobcats even at 9, and Duncan capped the rally with her game-winner from eight meters out.

Virginia Wesleyan (0-2) got on the board first on a goal by Anne Marie Nash less than five minutes in, but junior Page Macey (North County/Linthicum, Md.) and Ritz found the net three minutes apart to put the Bobcats ahead.

Laura Wallace pulled the Marlins even just 30 seconds later before FSU moved back in front when Brumby hit off an assist from Nicol.

However, Virginia Wesleyan closed out the first half with four straight goals and held a 6-3 lead at the break.

The Bobcats pulled to within 6-5 with two quick strikes to open the second half.

Ritz connected off an assist from Nicol at 28:40, and junior Caitlin Howley (Damascus/Damascus, Md.) followed with a goal off a feed from Macey.

The Marlins increased their lead to 9-5 with three goals over the next five minutes. Wallace notched her fourth goal of the day, Megan Parris tallied her second and Nash added her third before FSU mounted its late rally.

Ritz's four goals tied her career high set in a 22-7 win over Methodist last season. She also added an assist.

Bobcat senior Sarah Shockley (Fallston/Fallston, Md.) made 11 saves to earn the victory.

Frostburg State returns to action Friday when it travels to Charlotte, N.C., to take on Queens University at 4:00 pm.
