Lacrosse Vanquishes Villa Julie

FROSTBURG, MD - - Frostburg State Lacrosse toppled visiting Villa Julie Saturday afternoon 21-10. The Red and Black, led offensively by junior Page Macey (Linthicum, Md./North County) and sophomores Stefanie Ritz (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and Kelley Duncan (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), scored 13 first-half goals and eight second-stanza tallies, improving to 9-4 on the season.

The Bobcats opened scoring in the first minute when Ritz scored the first of her four goals off an assist from Macey, followed by a tally at 1:08 from junior Caitlin Howley (Damascus, Md./Damascus).

The Mustangs (1-11) charged back with three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead when Molly McCaffery scored at 2:13, Meagan Cowley scored at 2:26 and McCaffery found the net again at 3:23.

FSU edged ahead, scoring two more. Freshman Brittany Brumby (Quince Orchard/Gaithersburg, Md.) tallied the first of her three goals at 4:44 and Ritz found the net at 5:59.

Miller scored one for VJC at 6:12, but Brumby answered at 9:19, followed by a goal from sophomore Tara Blake (Crofton, Md./Arundel) at 9:38.

Colleen Baughman put one on the board for the Mustangs with a goal at 10:19, but was answered by Ritz with a tally less than a minute later.

Cowley found the net for VJC again at 12:09, but sophomore Kate Nicol (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) tallied one for the Bobcats at 13:07 off an assist from Howley.

Macey found the net at 17:07 and VJC replied at 21:10 with its last first half goal coming from Kim Gorsch.

FSU closed out the first-stanza with four straight. Duncan found her first at 21:21, Macey with her second at 22:50, Brumby with her last tally at 23:33 and Duncan with her second with less than a minute left.

Blake and Ritz each added a tally at 37:04 and 37:24, respectively. VJC then added another score at 45:17 from Lisa Cinquegrani, but Duncan found the net again 46:35 off an assist from Macey, followed by Macey goals at 47:35 and 50:05. Blake and Duncan assisted those goals, respectively.

The Mustangs tallied one more at 54:36, but were shut down when Macey and Duncan took charge, Macey with two goals and an assist, and Duncan with two goals. Freshman Ashley Mattison (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) added an assist on Macey's last goal.

The Bobcats closed-out the game in style when freshman Kelly Daly (Southern Regional/Barnegat, N.J.) sealed the victory with her first collegiate goal with less than one-minute left.

Defensively, freshman Tina Trent (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) was outstanding with nine groundballs, five caused turnovers and five draw controls.

Senior goalie Sarah Shockley (Fallston, Md./Fallston) made 10 saves on the day for the win.

Frostburg State returns to action Wednesday, April 28 when it travels to take on host Ohio Wesleyan at 4:30 p.m.
